I was out of the country for the last two months. While I was pleased spending time in homeland working so much and making new friends, I think I got a bit lost. Before I left, I'd painted an identity of myself as an individual--what I like and dislike, my personality, my tendencies, strengths and weaknesses...stuff that made me me. But in a new setting with different culture and colleagues, I faded away. My first reaction was confusion, then disappointment. Now I'm back, hopefully I can build something more solid from the inside out.

For a while last year I obsessed over these flowers. They had the strangest origami-like shapes and bloomed in vibrant hues of purple and fuchsia. Three (or was it four?) sharp triangular edges whorled in paper-thin petals. I'd take strolls through the neighborhood and see doors and walls along random streets curtained with them and quietly snap off a branch and take it home. By the time I got upstairs, the flowers would already be drooping limply off the stem in my hand.

Jonny Greenwood scored the music for the film adaptation of Norwegian Wood, literary embodiment of the disillusionment and loneliness of youth by Mr. Murakami.

One of the singular memories of my young adulthood is of reading this book during winter vacation at the newly constructed house my parents moved into while I had gone away to college. Our 3 story (including the basement) block of concrete and stucco was at the corner end lot of a housing community developed by hewing a forest of trees in the middle of nowhere in DeKalb County, Georgia. The windows to my room looked onto a tall canopy of old trees that been saved from the calamity of their neighbors, at least for that time being. For a kid raised by immigrant parents in Californian suburb, being there felt close to nature.

Tim Hamilton Redux presentation on Friday had photographs by Collier Schorr looping in the background. Kalup Linzy also performed. Frankie and I drank lots of champagne and vodka sodas, respectively.

Q, whose mixed-race looks read “Asian” in America and “weird” in Asia, was summarily rejected. ... Read this article on NY Mag and instantly felt a connection with Maggie Q, because basically that's kind of what I have been doing.
